What is the GLA:D® Program and How Can It Help You Manage Osteoarthritis?

The GLA:D® (Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark) Program is an evidence-based, 8-week education and exercise initiative specifically designed to help individuals manage stiff and painful knees or hips caused by osteoarthritis. Developed in Denmark and recently adapted for Canadian participants, the program has been proven to reduce pain, decrease the reliance on painkillers, and improve overall physical activity levels of those suffering from knee and hip osteoarthritis.

Is the Osteoarthritis GLA:D® Program Right for You?

Are you considering the GLA:D® Canada Program at Trent Health in Motion and wondering if it's the right fit for you? Before joining the program, a Trent Health in Motion therapist will conduct a thorough physical assessment to determine if your symptoms align with what the program is designed to address.

However, there are certain factors that may disqualify you from participating in the program, such as:

  • Having other causes for your hip and/or knee issues, such as soft tissue or connective tissue problems, inflammatory joint disease, fractures, or other diseases.
  • Experiencing more pronounced symptoms from other conditions, like chronic generalized pain or fibromyalgia.
  • Inability to understand and communicate in English, as translation services may not be available for the educational components and exercise sessions.

If you have issues with another body part, such as your low back, that might hinder your ability to perform the exercises, your therapist can address this issue first to ensure you fully benefit from the program.

What's Included?

The GLA:D® Program consists of two main components: education sessions and neuromuscular exercise sessions.

2-3 Education Sessions (90-minutes)

  • Understanding osteoarthritis, its causes, and signs
  • Existing treatments for osteoarthritis
  • Ways to self-manage your symptoms
  • Benefits of exercise for osteoarthritis and how to do it
  • Dealing with everyday challenges caused by osteoarthritis

12 Neuromuscular Exercise Sessions (60 minutes)

  • Group exercise sessions twice a week for 6 weeks led by a Chiropractor
  • Understand how to move and sit correctly
  • Get stronger by doing functional exercises
  • Discover how to use these exercises in daily life

Suffering from Hip or Knee Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. This condition can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected, causing them to seek out effective treatment options to manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being.

Currently, there is no cure for osteoarthritis. However, various treatment options can be employed to manage the symptoms and improve the function of the affected joints. One crucial aspect of managing osteoarthritis is to educate oneself about the condition, its symptoms, and the available treatment options like the Osteoarthritis GLA:D Program here at Trent Motion in Health. This knowledge can empower individuals to take an active role in their care and make informed decisions about their treatment plan.
